Institutional & Public Works

Recreation buildings for the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Recreation and the Fairmount Park Commission, a museum for La Salle University, and community rooms. In his introduction he writes that his work for the City matters most to him.

No. 24La Salle University Art Museum

Olney Avenue, North Philadelphia · 2000–2012

A free-standing museum for the university’s collection, then housed in a classroom basement. Galleries the size of a large living room follow one another in art-historical sequence, from the Ancient to the Contemporary, recalling Kahn’s idea of the room as “the place of the mind.” The museum is entered at one end, and visitors finish where they began. Skylit galleries sit above offices, classrooms and a library along an open loggia; small gabinetti for drawings and prints vary the route. Unbuilt.

No. 25La Salle University Art Museum, Initial Plan

North Philadelphia · 2000–2012

An earlier scheme on another site, extending a campus walkway across a playing field to join the university’s two separated sections, with the museum along the walk and its entrance through archways under a wing that spans it. Unbuilt.

No. 26Conestoga Playground Building

Department of Recreation, West Philadelphia · 1977

His first commission for the Department of Recreation: a new playground and community building on an open lot, with ball fields and courts. The roof rises then drops to admit north light through a clerestory into the community room. Renovated in 2015 with artwork by the Mural Arts Program.

No. 27Penrose Playground Building Addition

Department of Parks and Recreation, North Philadelphia · 2015

Among his most recent buildings for the City: a long addition straddling an existing swimming pool, with a corridor through the building, a multi-purpose room, kitchen and changing rooms opening to the pool, in red brick with precast trim. Praised by the Philadelphia Art Commission.

No. 28Junod Playground Building Additions

Department of Recreation, Northeast Philadelphia · 1978–1995

Two phases of additions, twenty-five years apart, providing rooms for day care, dance, crafts and meetings. The brick additions fit into the quadrants of the existing building; a raw concrete support in the clerestory inverts its pyramidal roof. A relief by Michael Webb was made under the City’s Percent for Art program.

No. 29Fitzpatrick Playground Building Addition

Department of Recreation, Northeast Philadelphia · 2003

A multi-purpose room with kitchenette and restrooms in colored concrete block matched to the existing building, whose angled form it echoes.

No. 30Hunting Park Recreation Center Renovation

Fairmount Park Commission, North Philadelphia · 1990

A complete renovation of the two-story brick recreation building: a rebuilt second floor with an activity room, offices and kitchen, a new masonry stair tower and a new gymnasium floor.

No. 31Social Room at The Philadelphian

Pennsylvania Avenue, Philadelphia · 2002

An interior renovation of the residents’ social room, which led to commissions for several apartments in the building.

No. 32Gershman YMHA Projects

Broad and Pine Streets, Philadelphia · 1992

For philanthropist Elaine Levitt Gershman: the restoration of the main lobby with architect David Levitt, a reception desk and offices of his own design, and renderings for restoring the auditorium with a theatrical entry and marquee on Pine Street.
